“V” For VictorYa

I’ve always been a fan of Victoria Beckham, right from her Posh Spice days. Not that I used to listen to the Spice Girls, but I sure used to notice their dressing, defined by their characters, and in any poster/ picture, my eyes were always drawn to VB sitting smug and polished in well- tailored clothes. To date, she holds her own style no matter which designer she dons. Her style mantra seems to be to defy her petite frame and always manage to project a tough girl image.

From being a pop star, dancer,  businesswoman, actress,  model, to an author, more than anything else today she is known as a designer, what with her own line in denim garments, perfumes and dresses that can be worn for a party or on the red carpet, as well as being three New York Fashion Weeks old. Think Victoria and you think power shoulders, geometric lines, constructed silhouettes and solid monochromatic colors. Well, this is exactly what her clothing lines talk about too, the only contrary element in her latest collection being the splash of colors she’s used, rather than her usual palette of dull black and greys. It’s all about the leg, for 2009 with high rise hemlines and YSL platform pumps.

Speaking of her personal style which is pretty much the same, Mrs. Becks wouldn’t be caught dead in any footwear that falls under 5 ½” in height. Oh no way! It seemed like she was proving her edgy style statement, when she turned up to unveil her fragrance line, in an amazing, figure-hugging grey Antonio Berardi dress wearing a pair of Alexander McQueen’s thigh-high PVC-chic boots with gravity defying 5-and-a-half inch platforms (I found the pic for you)- with no heels! She spent the whole event on tippy toes, hanging onto hubby, Becks’ arm for support.

Another fetish of the former Spice Girl, something she’s never seen without, would be her Birkins. Her obsession for them is so great that they’ve rubbed off on Mr. Beckham too, (I’m not surprised) and now he can be seen everywhere with a bag on one arm and Victoria on the other.

Though after her first book, VB is “Learning To Fly”, she still has her feet on the ground and the world at her feet. Soon after, she authored “That Extra Half an Inch: Hair, Heels and Everything In Between”, a light- hearted look at all things that smell of fashion.

Victoria’s pretty derriere warmed the judge’s seat at the fourth season of Project Runway and she honoured the winner, Christian Siriano (one of my favs) by wearing his show stopping dress to a red carpet event. She has also made a cameo appearance with her pretty face, in the television series “Ugly Betty”.

She is an absolute trendsetter right from hair to accessories, working on women around the world. On the lines of style icons of yester years, classy was synonymous with Audrey Hepburn, edgy meant Madonna, but both rolled into one, spells one thing- V.I.C.T.O.R.I.A., a story of success unto the end.

A Day at Bull Ring

This being one of my first articles, I thought I’d write about something close to my heart and truly enjoy doing. Nothing else but, shopping! The feminine gender’s pleasure and recipe for an instant spirit- lift.  I really can’t say the same for the male of our species though. “What could be as fascinating as shopping itself, (but not as much)?” I asked myself. “The people who shop, of course,” replied me. So off to Bull Ring I went, to “spy”, however impolite it may sound, on innocent shoppers and their quirks and man, was I dumbstruck at the diversity of them! I was surprised to see even males around and then realized they were essentially tagging behind their ladies, carrying either shopping bags or babies.

the window gazerTHE WINDOW GAZER-

She wanders around stores pressing her nose against the windows and stares at everything on display. She is the one who walks around inside stores, picks up clothes, holds them against herself and checks herself out in the mirrors. She is also the one who will try out all the pretty party dresses she likes in the fitting rooms. She does it all day and at all shops, but never actually buys anything.

the sale grabberTHE SALE GRABBER-

Come rain, sun, sleet or snow. Come what may. If there be a sale, Miss. Sale Shopper’s hawk-like nose will sniff it out a mile away and she will be there, one of the earliest of the early birds to pick up the “good stuff before it’s all gone”. And she is not a sucker to fall for the tricks of the marketing trade, because she has already seen a hundred bargains before arriving at the one she’s at.

lady flashLADY FLASH-

This one here, either has no time at all on her hands or she is the indulger with a well- lined pocket. Speedy walks into the store and her hands move in rapid action as they pick things off the shelf and throw them into her shopping cart/ bag. She doesn’t seem to have a list. I’m guessing she has it by-heart since checking items off consumes precious time. Unless if she’s the indulgent shopper, then she doesn’t need any lists. She buys everything her eyes fall on, everything she fancies.

Note: She might brush past you rudely or nudge you with her trolley, if you are in her way. Don’t glare! Don’t you understand she’s in a hurry?

the slothTHE SLOTH-

She glides into a store looking around with a vacant expression. “I’m alright,” she says to the enquiring sales assistant. Slowly, but systematically she goes down each aisle, choosing the things she wants. She ponders and contemplates. Apparently, she is someone with all the time in the sweet world and she makes sure she makes complete use of it.

Psstt.. She’s the one who always seems to be apologising to be in the way of the hasty shopper (or any other shopper in fact).

the shoppo-phobe

THE SHOPPO-PHOBE-

The name says it all. She is  an absolute shame to womankind. She may saunter in with friends who like shopping, but ultimately, boredom takes over and she sulks around, unable to fit in. All I hope for is that, one day, she will transform and that she too, will realise and rejoice in the pleasures of shopping. I have faith.

Keeping with the shopping theme, I thought I can put this up too. I found it on the net while browsing for something else.

I’m here!

I’ve done it! (Finally) a fashion blog to my name, inspired by other bloggers I’ve been stalking since the end of last year. For starters, I’m Madhumitha (I’d rather just say Madhu. It’s comical to hear my name being mangled by teeth and tongue) and I’ve been a fashion-holic ever since I was little.

Loose Threads was simply built around the word “random”- random thoughts, random pictures, random articles, random photo shoots and anything else fashion/ design! I’m going to cover all these and maybe some more, things I heart, things I hate, things I do and those I don’t. I’m clueless about which track this blog is going to tread in the boulevard of fashion, but for now, I’m here and that’s all that matters.

A big hug and thank you to Amy Purfield- Clark and Vicky Jai for helping me breathe life into this blog. I hope to not let them down and keep it running till I turn senile!
